George “No Show” Jones is an American country singer whose history is littered with acrimonious broken marriages, alcoholism and drug abuse, but whose place in the Country Music Hall of Fame is assured as a result of his huge success in the charts throughout his long career.

His first hit was “Why, Baby, Why” which was released in 1955. It was his third release, but the first to chart. His debut album, The Grand Ole Opry’s New Star was released in 1957 and was the first of a very long list of releases during his career. He released nearly 50 albums during the 60s and 70s of which 18 reached the Top 10 of the Country album charts. Throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s the hits kept coming, with more than 20 Top 10 singles in each decade - though they barely made an impression on the mainstream Billboard charts. He has collaborated with many significant artists during his career, including Tammy Wynette to whom he was married. The duets recorded during this time form a chronicle of their tempestuous marriage.

Latterly his hits have fallen off, but he has found re-birth in the endorsements of the up and coming generation of country stars who cite him as their inspiration.

Last weekend a stolen guitar passed hands for the princely sum of $10. Pretty unremarkable news, until you find out that the real value of the guitar was estimated at $18,000. The guitar in question belonged to country music supremo, George ‘No Show’ Jones, and it was pinched by a couple of teenagers in 1962 after a gig in Fort Worth, Texas. The lads sold it to Larry Berry who paid the miscreants an insubstantial $10 beer money. Efforts by Berry to return the guitar to its rightful owner took 46 years, during which Jones enjoyed over 140 Top 10 hits and four decades of wild living. Luckily for Berry, Jones showed his gratitude by repaying the original ten buck outlay.
