George Strait is an American country singer born in 1952. He was the first of the new traditionalists, the generation of young artists that revitalized country music in the mid-1980s by turning away from urban-cowboy crossover dreams. He has won many awards over the course of his career and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2006. Of the 37 albums he had released up until the start of 2007, only 3 have failed to achieve at least platinum certification.
He played for Rambling Country/Santee while in the US Army in 1971, and after he left the forces, for The Ace in the Hole Band, while studying for an agriculture degree. Eventually Strait signed with MCA, and the band became his backup band.
Strait's very first single "Unwound" was an immediate success, and a string of further hits followed. In total 42 George Strait singles have reached the No.1 spot on Billboard charts. In 1995 a 4xCD box-set revisited his output from 1976 to 1995, and included several unreleased tracks; the set was certified eight times platinum.
His most recent output has been a live album, Live at Texas Stadium, and a compilation of his greatest hits, 22 More Hits, both released in 2007.
