Biography

Edit

Gilberto Passos Gil Moreira (born June 26, 1942), better known as Gilberto Gil , is a Grammy Award-winning Brazilian singer, guitarist, and songwriter, known for both his musical innovation and political commitment. From 2003 to 2008, he served as Brazil's Minister of Culture in the administration of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Gil began playing music as a child and was still a teenager when he joined his first band. He started out as a bossa nova musician, eventually writing songs that reflected a new focus on political awareness and social activism. He was a key figure in the Música Popular Brasileira and tropicália movements of the 1960s, alongside artists like longtime collaborator Caetano Veloso. The Brazilian military regime that took power in 1964 saw both Gil and Veloso as a threat, and the two were held for nine months in 1969 before they were told to leave the country. Gil moved to London, but returned to state of Bahia in 1972 and continued his musical career, as well as working as a politician and environmental advocate.

Gil's musical style incorporates an eclectic range of influences, including rock, Brazilian genres including samba and forró, African music, and reggae.

Gilberto Gil

Oct, 13 2009

Last weekend saw the airing of a truly global charity event: a performance spectacular featuring a noteworthy roster of names, all hosted by a clown in a space station. Guy Laliberte is the Canadian circus entrepreneur responsible for Cirque Du Soleil, but for this performance his intention was to focus attention on the growing scarcity of clean water by hosting a series of linked events from around the world from his lofty vantage point on the International Space Station. His ambitious endeavor featured the disparate talents of U2 singer Bono, political singer songwriter Gilberto Gil, hip-shaking Shakira, barefoot chanteuse Joss Stone and Academy Award-winner A.R. Rahman, interspersed with commentary from actors, prominent politicians and environmental and social activists. Laliberte -- in his role as director of the One Drop Foundation -- paid $35 million for his place as the seventh space tourist, and said of his special space mission, "I decided to use this privilege to raise awareness of water issues. I believe that with true art and emotion we can convey a message."
