Gregg Gills is the DJ/producer known as Girl Talk. He splices together s multitude of other artists' tracks to produce new music and has released several albums.
Girl Talk has become known for his live shows which often devolve into hedonistic dance parties. Gills frequently abandons his laptop on the stage in favor of spending time in the crowd.
His 2006 album Night Ripper, thanks 200 artists which he sampled to produce the album. The track "Once Again" features 'contributions' from such diverse sources as Boston, Oasis, Genesis and Eminem.
Despite using hundreds of samples, Gills has never been sued by any labels and he cites "fair use," an exception to America's copyright laws which allows for the incorporation of copyrighted material into another artist's work. Because the music Gills uses are sonic slivers of others' material and he offers his music as free downloads, he has thus far averted litigation.
On November, 15 2010 Girl Talk surprised everyone by announcing his new album, All Day was free for streaming on his label's website. The release features 373 samples of hip-hop, classic rock, synth, and pop music over 71 minutes.
A native of Pittsburgh, PA, Gills started toying with music while in high school and continued while he was in college for biomedical engineering, specifically tissue engineering. He eventually dropped out to focus solely on music.
