Biography

Edit

Goldfrapp is a British electro-pop duo formed in 1999 and comprising Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory.

Felt Mountain was their first release in 2000. It was an ambient affair personified by the single "Lovely Head" but it was difficult to tour as a result of the lush orchestration, which needed a significant number of musicians to replicate live.

Black Cherry was released in 2003 and was altogether a more poppy upbeat affair, featuring the singles "Train" and "Strict Machine" in which Goldfrapp re-invented herself as a sexy diva. The critics enjoyed it, and it peaked at No.4 in the Billboard charts and went platinum in the UK.

Supernature (2005) was deliberately marketed as a dance oriented record after the success of their last album. The album did extremely well debuting at No.2 in the UK charts, selling over a million copies worldwide and earning two Grammy award nominations. By 2006 they had released an album of remixes from the Supernature album called We Are Glitter.

Their fourth album, Seventh Tree, was released in 2008. Stylistically, it marked a return to the "folktronica" genre of Felt Mountain. Will Gregory retired from touring as of this album.

In the News

Goldfrapp

Sep, 22 2009

Beatles related stories are everywhere at the moment, thanks to the release of their special Rock Band title and the belated reissuing and remastering of their full back catalog. Still to come is Nowhere Boy, a film about the childhood of John Lennon which is based on the memoirs written by Lennon’s half-sister, Julia Baird. The movie -- due for release next month -- is the directorial debut offering of Sam Taylor-Wood and will feature a cast including Aaron Johnson, Kristin Scott-Thomas and Anne-Marie Duff. Somewhat surprisingly the soundtrack credits will go to Goldfrapp, a band who first met while members were working on soundtracks which were never finally released. In this case, the project has reached fruition and can be seen for the first time when the film premieres at the London Film Festival on October 29. After the premiere, there’s no time for the band to sit and eat popcorn; they are in the middle of writing the follow-up to Seventh Tree, which they promise will be “a lot more up than the last.”
