Ghosts in the machines....In many respects, the band Grandaddy is endearingly anachronistic. Consisting of 5 men in their 20's and early 30's, they are very unassuming fellows who dress plainly and wear varying (and at times, disturbingly large) amounts of facial hair. They like to do things like skateboard, shoot guns and drink beer. It Strains a Bit too HardThis fits into a continuum of recent albums, from Sparklehorse's "Good Morning, Spider" to Giant Sand's "Chore of Enchantment" to the new melancholy releases from The Mekons, Yo La Tengo, Modest Mouse and Lambchop. If you like those, you'll probably like this, too, though it doesn't quite reach the heights of some of the others I've mentioned. It's been a stellar year for this kind of music, and this particular CD is good, but second-tier.
