Grandmaster Flash
Dec, 12 2008
This year has seen some big comebacks from artists previously consigned to history: Portishead's Third album arrived 11 years since their second and most agreed it was a big success; while Axl Rose finally delivered a new Guns N' Roses album 17 years after the last one. Now comes news of another comeback: legendary hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash is set to return with his first suite of original material in just over 20 years. Since 1988's On The Strength, Flash has released a few mix albums and compilations, but his split with the Furious Five including lead rapper Melle Mel caused obvious problems. The Bridge: Concept Of A Culture, due in March, replaces the Furious Five with Snoop Dogg, KRS-One, Q-Tip, Busta Rhymes and Big Daddy Kane, proving that Flash's esteem in hip-hop circles is still sky high. But we think it will be a long time until a new comeback record is set: English singer-songwriter Vashti Bunyan released Lookaftering in 2005, an incredible 35 years since her only previous LP.
