Overview Edit

Dookie is officially the third studio album put out by Green Day, being the first off the major record label Reprise Records and the first with producer Rob Cavallo (The Goo Goo Dolls, My Chemical Romance, Shinedown, etc). Arguably the most popular Green Day release, you can judge by general consensus, Dookie features many of the band’s most popular hits including “Basket Case”, “Longview”, and “Welcome to Paradise”. Such songs as these helped Dookie become Green Day’s “breakout” album, and later on, one of the strongest examples of the punk-revival movement of the early nineteen-nineties.

Guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Billie Joe Armstrong leans heavily on influence from bands like the Buzzcocks, The Sex Pistols, and The Ramones, but uses his personal knack for creating catchy punk songs throughout Dookie. Green Day jokes around with tongue-in-cheek humor, but ultimately tears on with an attitude of nothing but pure independence. And isn’t that what punk rock is all about anyway? With a great sense of adolescent urge against all which is normal and righteous, Dookie is perhaps the most important album of the nineties in terms of uniting music with the ideals of the youth of America at the time. Fast and loud throughout, the band’s third release flies by like a corvette but leaves an imprint like a Mack Truck. While it may leave some in awe, wondering what just happened, Dookie epitomizes the genius of Billie Joe Armstrong in that it becomes an album that the listener just has to hear over and over again. Still beloved in the eyes of most punks, the album holds true to show the character of Green Day at its best.

5 stars Welcome To Paradise
I remember the day I bought this album. I was thirteen years of age, and the year was 1994. It was the fifth CD I've "ever" bought, and it totally spun my musical tastes into high gear, driving me to discover a world that I had never been exposed to. Along with Offspring "Smash," this was the first album I've ever bought that I felt I could identify with on a personal level. This album was the cure for boredom in the lifeless suburb I grew up in. My buddies and I would just sit around listening …

3 stars good CD, grows on you
I bought it for "when I come around" but found the rest to be pretty good, too -especially "pulling teeth." This CD takes a while to get used to, but then is great. Pretty good lyrics, all done in good fun.
