Atlanta rapper Gucci Mane had a tumultuous 2005: after breaking through with the hit “So Icy” and releasing his debut album, he became involved in a beef with Young Jeezy about the hit single, and was later accused of murdering a Jeezy associate.
Gucci Mane earned a record deal after an early single “Black Tee” earned local airplay in Atlanta, Georgia. Debut album Trap House (2005) topped the Billboard Heatseekers chart and included “So Icy”, featuring Boo and Young Jeezy. Unfortunately a beef developed between Gucci Mane and Jeezy over rights to “So Icy”, spawning a succession of diss tracks aimed in either direction. In May 2005 Gucci Mane was attacked in a friend’s home, but managed to fire shots in self-defence. Later, an associate of Jeezy was found dead and Gucci Mane was charged with his murder. It took until early 2006 for the court to determine that there was insufficient evidence, and the case was dropped.
In 2006, Gucci Mane released his second album, Hard to Kill, and he followed that up with Trap-A-Thon in 2007. After signing with major label Atlantic, Gucci Mane released Back to the Trap House (2007).
