Though he was dead before the age of 30, Hank Williams changed the face of country music forever. His music brought country into the modern era, but always maintained a high level of respect for the music's traditions and foundations. The songs which he recorded during his brief time in the limelight have become country music staples and include eleven No.1 hits. The latter part of his career was blighted by addictions to alcohol and various pain medications which he used to deal with persistent back pain – a result of undiagnosed spina bifida. Nonetheless his legacy means that he continues to be referenced by musicians to the present day and it has earned him a spot on the Rolling Stone list of 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
He founded three generations of singing stars as both his son, Hank Williams Jr. and his grandson, Hank Williams III have enjoyed significant success.
