Hildegard von Bingen is the first composer of the western classical tradition whose biography is known, and is often cited as the first named composer (most extant compositions prior to her life are credited to "anonymous").
Hildegard was an abbess founding a new monastery Saint Rupertsberg at Bingen. During her lifetime she was known as a seer, as a result of visions that she believed had been sent to her by God.
After her death four unsuccessful attempts to canonize her were made by the Roman Catholic church, and this has led to some referring to her as a saint.
