Biography

Edit

Incubus were schoolboys when they got together in 1991. Friends Brandon Boyd (vocals), Mike Einzeger (lead guitar), Alex Katunich (Bass) and José Pasillas (drums) started to play music at school. They had released Fungus Amongus themselves and by the time they released their first funk-rock Chili Pepper-styled studio EP Enjoy Incubus in 1997, they had already built a local following as a result of their live performances in California.

Their first studio album was S.C.I.E.N.C.E. and it marked the departure of their original turntable man, and the arrival of Chris Kilmore. Their second album was 1999's Make Yourself which was a slow burner for them, though it finally achieved double platinum status, no doubt facilitated by the hit singles "Drive" and "Stellar".

When Morning View was released in 2001 they had diligently performed and worked their way to headlining success. They replaced Katunich with Ben Kenney after the tour for the Morning View album. A contract wrangle made life difficult for them in 2003 but they released 2004's A Crow Left of the Murder with Sony nonetheless.

After a break, they returned to the studio and released Light Grenades in late 2006 which debuted at No.1 in the US charts.

Thursday Throwdown: Incubus' "If Not Now, When?"

Jul, 21 2011

Incubus released their seventh studio album, If Not Now, When?, last week. The album is their first effort in five years, so naturally expectations are high. Rocksound’s Jan Walker gives the record a solid eight out of ten. “Shake off your preconceptions; Incubus' new one will shock even the die-hards...” the review starts with an ominous yet hopeful tone. “If Not Now, When? is the sound of Incubus coming of age. It’s not particularly experimental nor is it completely straightforward but it is concise and a risk that’s paid off.” However, Rob Hakimian over at One Thirty BPM gives the record a paltry 18% rating. “It seems as though the band has completely forgotten to keep up with music in the years they’ve been off, instead producing some of the most banal songs by any rock band in recent memory.” He goes on to say, “If Not Now, When? is an extreme disappointment…the passion that used to drive their music was once furious, but is now soppy and infinitely uninteresting.” What do you think about the new Incubus record? Is it a risk that’s paid off or infinitely uninteresting? Let us know what you think here. -Erin O.
