James Taylor is the Grammy-winning singer-songwriter best known for the track “You’ve Got a Friend”. He was married to fellow singer-songwriter Carly Simon in the 70s. (Though in a 1973 Rolling Stone interview, she stated with regards to her legendary song "You're So Vain", "No, it's definitely not about James...".)
Taylor rose to fame in the 1970's after the release of his much acclaimed second album Sweet Baby James, which spawned the hit song "Fire and Rain". Taylor struggled with heroin addiction throughout the 70s, however he still managed to record and toured throughout, releasing nine albums. All this work meant that he was rarely at home during this period, and in 1980 Simon reportedly gave Taylor an ultimatum: either spend more time with her and the kids or she would leave; his answer came in the form of the 1981 album Dad Loves His Work. Taylor finally kicked his drug habit in 1985, thanks to his second wife Kathryn Walker, and in celebration released his thirtieth studio album Never Die Young (1988). He released two albums that seemed to be a return to form: New Moon Shine (1991), and Hourglass (1997), which won the Grammy for Best Pop Album.
His last release of original material was 2002's October Road, written to celebrate his new relationship with third wife Caroline Smedvig, with whom Taylor has twin sons Rufus and Henry, born in 2001.
