UK band James rose to prominence during the Nineties with the anthemic hits "Sit Down" and "Laid".
The band, who met at university, signed to the Factory label in 1983, but it was 1991 when they broke through with a remixed, updated version of a previous release, "Sit Down". The single got to No.2 in the UK and the band became known for anthemic work, even though it wasn't entirely representative of the rest of their output.
They pursued a more restrained sound with producer Brian Eno, and the resulting album Laid was considered to be a career highlight, with singles "Say Something" and "Laid" doing well in the charts. The more experimental work that was also recorded during the Laid sessions was released separately as the Wah Wah album.
After two moderately successful albums, they came back with Pleased to Meet You which pleased critics and fans alike. Despite the acclaim, Tim Booth, the band's lead singer, left the band shortly after, and the band ground to a halt. The band are due to reform to tour the UK, in promotion of a new compilation album.
