I remember reading this title on some magazine back in 1986 when Janet's first effort was released.
I guess the media approach to her work must have been something like...'oh, here's another relative taking after him and trying to be in the market exploiting the family name".
Well, i have 2 objections upfront:
1 - him - being famously Michael Jackson - has long lost his mida touch..while Janet is still a chart topper and audience pleaser as i am writing this...some 17 years later.
2 - the critic could not have been more wrong than that, i believe that article must have been written even before they took a listen at the album.
CONTROL turned out to be one of the biggest sellers of the year, mostly because none would have expected such energy, hard-driven r'n'b beats delivered by such a young girl, and were intrigued by this.
Of course you find some fine ballads (LET'S WAIT AWHILE), some dance tunes (THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE and WHEN I THINK OF YOU), but honestly...would you have expected such indipendence declaration in CONTROL, such feminist stand-up in NASTY or WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELY?
I'll be honest and say it: no.
Janet had the look of your next-door neighbour's daughter, yet she turned out to be so self-confident and focused on her priority: NOT being labelled as Michael's little sister.
It sure helps her teaming up with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, a couple of former Prince's protegés.
Good move..and nice CD.
