Overview Edit

American Gangster is the tenth studio album by American rapper Jay-Z, released November 6, 2007 on Roc-A-Fella Records. It is Jay-Z's last release for the Def Label label and his first concept album, which was inspired by the film of the same name. The album features production from Diddy & The Hitmen, Just Blaze, and The Neptunes, among others. Guest appearances include Beanie Sigel, Lil Wayne, Pharrell, and Nas. Jay-Z released an a cappella version of the album on the date of his 38th birthday, December 4, 2007.

The album was released to commercial success, despite being pulled from the iTunes Store at Jay-Z's request. It debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 425,861 copies in its first week, while tying Elvis Presley for the second most U.S. number-one albums. Upon its release, American Gangster received general acclaim from most music critics. Rolling Stone named it the third best album of 2007. The album has been certified platinum in sales by the Recording Industry Association of America, following sales in excess of one million copies in the United States.

4 stars American Legend
Jay-Z is one of the greatest rappers of all time. Back in the 90's he dropped classic after classic but then he decided to retire after The Black Album although he was never really gone but he didn't release a new albums til last year when he decided to return from the hiatus with Kingdom Come. The album got lukewarm response and while the production wasn't bad it wasn't the right album to comeback with dealing with anything from his hollywood friends, to how 30 is the new 20 and the redundant s…

3 stars Not Jay-Z Quality
This CD is not Essential Jay-Z and some may argue this point, but I dont think Jay-Z put a lot of effort into this particular CD. The tracks are fairly redundant tales of street life. This CD does not compare to In My Life Time, The Blue Print, or The Black Album.

In all honest Jay-Z should have stayed retired, not that he does not make any fairly good songs now, but he won't be able to be at the same level he was prior to retiring. The Black Album was so definitive that it does not even seem right to buy another Jay-Z CD.
