You might mistake Jeff Beck's on-again, off-again appearances on record as signalling disinterest in the music business. More likely, his periodic blasts of creativity -- punctuated by long (or semi-long) pauses away from recording -- indicate how much Beck is a perfectionist. His early fire-breathing guitar work helped shape hard rock, and his mid-70s forays into jazz-fusion might only have confused the matter. He had Rod Stewart in his band, but then rather quickly, Beck had no singer at all, just a boatload of guitar talent.
