Jennifer Hudson

As Jennifer Hudson emerges blinking into the sunlight after the horrific events of last October, she must surely be hoping that better times still lie ahead. Her career stalled in its tracks just weeks after the eagerly awaited release of her eponymous debut album. The murder of three members of her family meant that she retreated from the public gaze and attended to her personal grief. Now she’s back, making her first public appearance in months performing the national anthem at the Super Bowl. It may have been lip-synched à la Ashlee Simpson, but that’s hardly unusual these days and nobody denies that Hudson can belt out a good tune live when she gets a chance. Her next gig will be at the Grammy Awards on February 8 and then at the 40th NAACP Image Awards on February 12, when she will join Seal on the bill of performers. Best of all are plans to re-release that Grammy-nominated debut album later this year, giving Jennifer a chance to pick up where she left off before tragedy struck.

Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and young nephew have been shot to death in Chicago. Darnell Donerson, 57, and Jason Hudson, 29, were discovered by Hudson’s sister, Julia, on October 24. Julian Hudson, 7, was then found on Monday after being missing over the weekend. With such tragedy in her life at present it is little surprise that the up-and-coming music star, best known for her Oscar winning performance as Effie White in Dreamgirls, has canceled her current plans to film a new music video. The video was intended to support the forthcoming “If This Isn’t Love,” the new single from her eponymous debut album which was released less than a month ago. Police have taken Julian's stepfather William Balfour, 27, into custody while they investigate the cause of this triple tragedy.

It's been a long journey for Jennifer Hudson since her first singing job on a Disney cruise liner. Her subsequent appearances on the third season of American Idol in 2004 showed everyone in the nation how powerful and emotive her voice could be, and she wasn't dissuaded with an eventual seventh-place finish. Instead she went into acting, starring as Effie White in Dreamgirls alongside Beyonce, Jamie Foxx and Eddie Murphy, and outshining her more illustrious co-stars. Her on-screen rendition of "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" was spellbinding, and her acting wasn't bad either: for her very first picture, Jennifer won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, as well as a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and many others. But singing is her first love, and last week she finally released her debut album, Jennifer Hudson. Fans flocked to the stores to buy a copy, but if countless awards for supporting film roles suggest that Jennifer may always be a bridesmaid, but never a bride, her chart position bears that out: second, with a very impressive 217,000 sales, but still way behind the runaway chart leader T.I.
