Overview Edit

Aqualung is the fourth studio album by the rock band Jethro Tull, released in 1971. It was their first album with new bassist Jeffrey Hammond and last album featuring Clive Bunker on drums.

The first side of the LP contains a series of six character sketches, including two sketches of people of questionable repute (title character Aqualung and Cross-Eyed Mary) and two autobiographical tracks including "Cheap Day Return", written by band leader Ian Anderson while returning from a visit to his critically ill father. The overall message of the lyrics on the second side is said to be "pro-God but anti-church", and makes the statement that organized religion can actually restrict a person's relationship with his God instead of enhancing it. Anderson has denied any attempt to create a concept album (see below).

5 stars A Genuine Treasure
Aqualung is a wonderful, superlative, essentially perfect album. From the day it was released right up to now the record is fresh, exciting, compelling, intelligent, forcefully rhythmic, melodic, brilliantly played, brilliantly sung, and has one of the best ever cover illustrations to boot. After nearly thirty years of wearing out various copies of it, I have yet to tire of this phenomenal artistic tour de force.

I had the great good fortune of seeing Jethro Tull live when they were doing the or…

2 stars If the sound quality were there...
Terrific album, lousy sound quality. I love this album, but don't understand why Capitol can't spend a few bucks remastering the thing. It sounds like it's from 3rd generation tapes--they could have done a better job recording the vinyl to CD. Very disappointing.
