Biography

Edit

Jewel is the US-born singer songwriter and actress best known for her folk-pop hit “You Were Meant for Me”.

All-American folk-pop princess Jewel (born Jewel Kilcher) came to prominence in the mid to late nineties after being discovered singing in a coffee house by an Atlantic Records executive. The debut album Pieces of You (1995) eventually sold more than 12 million copies worldwide and spawned the hit singles "Who Will Save Your Soul", "You Were Meant for Me", and "Foolish Games", which also featured in the 1997 film Batman & Robin, starring George Clooney and Chris O'Donnell.

Her second album Spirit (1998) produced three singles -- "Hands", "Down So Long" and a new version of "Jupiter" -- however it didn't manage to equal the success of her debut. In 1999 Jewel made her big screen debut in the film from Ang Lee Ride with the Devil, also starring Tobey Maguire and Jonathan Rhys-Meyers. In 2001 Jewel released her third album This Way, which peaked at No.9 in the US charts without the aid of singles.

In 2003 Jewel moved away from her folk-pop sound and released a dance album. 0304 was her highest debuting album to date, reaching No.2 in its first week of release, and it spawned two hit singles too, "Intuition" and "2 Become 1". In 2006 she released her last studio album with Atlantic Records, Goodbye Alice in Wonderland. The release showed a return to Jewel's roots after the dance-pop of her previous album, but it suffered from sluggish sales.

The now label-less Jewel has recently said she would like her next offering to be a country album.

Jewel Promotes New CD With Karaoke

Jul, 17 2010

Singer-songwriter Jewel played a prank on patrons of a small karaoke bar in LA by dressing up as someone else to sing her own songs. Cleverly disguised as a dowdy business woman, the seemingly unwilling ‘Karen’ allowed herself to be called to the stage to sing a Jewel track. According to one bewildered member of the audience, Karen sounded even better than the real thing. After two songs in disguise, Jewel removed the fake nose and wig to reveal her true self, before treating the bar to a third song. The undercover karaoke trick was masterminded and filmed by a site called Funny Or Die, and the resulting clip has already been viewed over 2,500,000 times since it was posted on Tuesday. It’s a neat stunt for Jewel, whose fame has slipped a little since the heyday of her multi-platinum debut Pieces of You (1995). Her latest album Sweet and Wild was released in June, and there’s at least one bar full of people who will be hotfooting to purchase it now.
