Joe Satriani

Last time we heard from Joe Satriani he was pretty grumpy with Coldplay, having accused them of stealing his tune for their mega hit Viva La Vida. But Joe’s been in the music game a long time, and has been diverting his attentions from the negativity of lawsuits to the positivity of creating some seriously good rock. Last year he joined forces with Michael Anthony and Sammy Hagar (both former Van Halen), and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chilis) to create a supergroup of thoroughly impressive credentials. They called themselves Chickenfoot and said that the band and their forthcoming album will "kick a donkey’s ass six ways to Sunday and back again." We’re certainly not going to argue with that statement, because we’ve listened to the two taster tracks which were recently released onto their website. So look out for the album which is due out in June -- the music is a lot less silly than the name might suggest.

Virtuoso rock guitarist Joe Satriani has filed a lawsuit against Coldplay for allegedly plagiarizing one of his songs on their massive worldwide hit "Viva La Vida". Satriani claims that the Coldplay song includes "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental "If I Could Fly", used without his permission and without credit. He is asking for a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" arising from the song, which would add up to huge pile of cash if Satch won his case. "Viva La Vida" is the title track to Coldplay's fourth studio album, one of the biggest selling albums of 2008 worldwide, and was a worldwide smash hit in its own right. It was the band's first Hot 100 chart-topper, a No.1 in their native UK and a Top 10 hit in several more countries. This week Coldplay earned six Grammy nominations, with three of them directly relating to this song - including the much coveted Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year awards. It's not the first time this song has been accused of sounding suspiciously familiar - earlier this year, New York band Creaky Boards alleged it plagiarized one of their songs too. They have since dropped their case and must now be hoping Satch doesn't come after them too; but they would, surely, have a much smaller pile of cash to protect.
