John Lee Hooker is the legendary blues singer-songwriter and guitarist. With over a hundred albums to his credit, there is a long list of successful artist who cite him as an influence.
Hooker was born in near Clarksdale in 1917, growing up in the depression hit States he had to move around the country for work. In 1948 Hooker was in Detroit and performing in blues clubs. His distinctive, half spoken, half singing style and guitar playing quickly secured him a reputation and the opportunity to record.
His early releases brought him success, his debut single "Boogie Chillen" went to No.1 on the R&B chart. It, and "Boom Boom", were both included in the 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll list.
Hooker overcame the low payments paid to black musicians for their recordings by making a lot of recordings, adapting blues songs or 'writing '(Hooker was illiterate) new ones as he went, he also recorded under a number of different names.
His work has been influential on bands from both side of the Atlantic. Groups including, The Yardbirds, Canned Heat and Led Zepplin credit Hooker as an inspiration and Van Morrison, a life long fan of his, can be heard performing with Hooker on A Night In San Francisco album.
Amongst Hookers biggest sellers was 1989's The Healer album, on which he plays with Carlos Santana, Keith Richards and Bonny Raitt. The collaboration with Raitt would earn them both a Grammy.
Hooker died in 2001, but not before being recognised as one of the most influential artists with induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the Blues Hall of Fame and a Grammy Life Time Achievement Award.
