Overview Edit

Imagine: John Lennon is a 1988 documentary film about English musician John Lennon.

Imagine: John Lennon, with its wealth of stock Lennon footage and self-narration, proved to be a well-received film. Bridging his two musical phases together as a member of The Beatles and as a solo artist, Imagine: John Lennon is a career-spanning collection of Lennon's many musical highlights. In addition, there are a couple of heretofore unreleased recordings: an acoustic demo of "Real Love" taped in 1979 (an alternate recording of which would be finished by The Beatles for 1996' s Anthology 2) and a rehearsal take of "Imagine" in mid-1971 before the final take was captured.

The project arrived at a timely juncture and was an attempt at thwarting the then-released The Lives of John Lennon by Albert Goldman, a controversial and reputation-tarnishing book which many dismissed as fiction, including Ono and Lennon's close friends.

5 stars Imagine what could have been, but enjoy what was
I never truly appreciated the genius of John Lennon as a solo artist until I bought this CD. This is a great introduction to Lennon's music, combining a number of true Beatles classics along with some amazing Lennon solo tracks. The fact that several of the Beatles songs are not the group's more famous ones is an added plus. The very familiar Twist and Shout and Help! are great, but these songs are only an oldies' station away most of the time. The psychedelic Strawberry Fields Forever is great …

3 stars Would You Buy A CD For Just Two Tracks?
The dangling carrots here are Real Love and Imagine rehearsal. Most Lennon fans already have most, if not all of the rest. The "filler" is some of the finest music around. As the John Lennon Anthology showed, there was a lot of other things that they could have put on here to make it a better value.
