Johnny Winter -- the blues guitarist, singer and producer -- was born John Dawson Winter III in Texas in 1944. At the age of 15 he made his debut recording with Johnny and the Jammers who released the track "School Day Blues". He moved on to a trio with Tommy Shannon and Uncle John Turner, who played on his album Johnny Winter, which made the charts in 1969. The album was a mix of blues covers and Winter's own work. He was later invited to play at Woodstock.
In 1973 he released his fifth studio album, Still Alive and Well, a track of the same name was written for him by Rick Derringer to celebrate Winter's recovery from drug problems. The album provided him with his highest charting position.
In addition to singing and producing his own work, Winters produced Muddy Waters comeback album Hard Again in 1977, the stripped back sound was popular with critics and fans alike. In 1988 Winter's popularity was celebrated by his induction into the Blues Hall of Fame.
Winter's latest studio album I'm a Bluesman was released in 2004.
