Josh Freese

Less than a month ago we wrote about Josh Freese, drummer for bands such as Devo and A Perfect Circle, whose novel marketing plan for his new solo album included a range of compelling extras with every purchase. Prices ranged from $7 (digital download and three videos) to $75,000 (digital download, five personally written songs, a drum kit, Josh's car, a lasagne made by Josh’s wife, and much more). The story created a lot of interest, though nobody really knew if anyone would pay up for the more elaborate packages. In fact, it seems plenty of people were keen to purchase a little more than just the album. The reasonably priced $250 packages, which included a drumhead and lunch with Josh, sold out quickly, and the $500 options are selling well. One nineteen year old fan opted to dig deep for the $20,000 bundle, though it’s not clear whether he was most enticed by the drum lesson, the back massage, the game of mini-golf, the two personally written songs, or one of the many other bonuses. Luckily Mrs. Freese can rest easy: Josh has yet to find a fan willing to pay $75,000 to try her lasagne. For those who are a little more conventional in their music purchasing habits, the no-frills hard copy of Since 1972 went on sale on April 14.

Josh Freese, respected drummer of several notable bands (NIN, Devo, A Perfect Circle) and session musician of choice for many, released his sophomore solo album on March 24, Since 1972. His marketing plan is ambitious, unconventional and, he assures us all, definitely not a prank. Though a simple digital download of the album costs a reasonable $7, there is a sliding scale of incentivized options which may encourage the hesitant purchaser to give the music a try. Visitors to his website can browse the purchase plans which include extras ranging from a simple t-shirt, to the pick of any 3 items of clothing out of Josh’s closet, a signed cymbal, one of Josh’s drumkits (he has 5), or a massage, from Josh. If any fan can stretch to $5,000, Josh will write a song about him and make it available on iTunes, and at the eye-watering $75,000 level one of the added extras is Josh joining your band for a month. Every single plan includes the most important thing of all -- a copy of the album -- and for those who are happy to stick to old fashioned purchase methods, Josh’s album will be on general sale from April 14.
