She was born into a theatrical family, appearing at her father’s theatre while less than three years old. By the time she was 13 she had signed a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, although, in an era of busty screen sirens and cute-as-a-button child stars, she evaded the stereotype which would have made her easy to place. The constant measurement against an ideal which she could never match led to a life-long insecurity which she failed to overcome. Nonetheless she went on to star in a series of musical films which established a repertoire of incredibly popular songs whose appeal has endured beyond her short life
