Julian Casablancas Offers His Services To The Mets
Aug, 17 2010
Earlier this year Julian Casablancas released his debut solo album, Phrazes For The Young, reformed with The Strokes to record new material and headline a handful of summer festivals, and is now getting ready to release that much-anticipated fourth Strokes album. But he's got other plans in mind too: he wants to record a theme song for the struggling New York Mets.
"I'm totally serious," he told Rolling Stone. "I have some ideas, I have to see if they like it. I've got a jar stuffed with songs, all these ideas that are just me humming into a recording device."
The Mets have used their theme song "Meet the Mets" for almost half a century, so Casablancas would do well to displace it. But Keith Hernandez, their announcer, told the magazine he was keen to hear him give it a go. "As a Strokes fan, I would get a kick out of hearing what Julian can do with the song. It could be interesting and I am sure baseball fans, and especially Mets fans, would enjoy hearing it."

The Strokes have never officially split up, but it's now almost four years since their third album First Impressions of Earth, and they all seem to be pretty busy on solo and side pursuits at the moment. Will they ever reconvene? Fabrizio Moretti and Nikolai Fraiture are in Little Joy and Nickel Eye respectively, Albert Hammond Jr. has released two solo albums, and now frontman Julian Casablancas is getting ready to release his own debut solo album, Phrazes for the Young. Produced by Jason Lader and Mike Mogis, the eight track record is due out next month on RCA (Rough Trade in the UK). To warm up for the big day, Casablancas is set to play some shows with a six-piece band. The first gig has been announced as taking place on August 31 at Tokyo's Duo Music Exchange, and it's already a sell-out. The future of The Stokes may well depend on the success of Julian's solo career, so we're keen to hear what he's come up with, and how the crowd receive it.
