Biography

Edit

Since going solo from 'N SYNC, Justin Timberlake's sleek and sexy brand of pop has been so successful he's been branded 'the new King of Pop.' It's a world away from his early years as a Disney TV tearaway, former beau of Britney, and boy-band puppet.

Justin Timberlake is the pop and R&B singer, record producer, occasional actor and now label executive from Millington, Tennessee who originally found fame with 90s boy band 'N SYNC. His first solo album while on a seemingly permanent hiatus from 'N SYNC was Justified (2002), which spawned many hit singles including "Like I Love You", "Cry Me a River" and "Rock Your Body". Of these singles "Cry Me a River" drew the most media attention as the lyrics and video seemed to allude to Timberlake's recent break-up with long-time girlfriend and pop superstar Britney Spears. The couple's relationship and subsequent break-up was always the subject of media scrutiny and this helped "Cry Me a River" to become the centre of much speculation. Justified also showed the new, more adult direction that Timberlake was pursuing, taking influences from R&B and hip-hop rather than the pure pop that 'N SYNC where famous for.

In February 2004, while performing with Janet Jackson during the Super Bowl XXXVIII, he was involved in the infamous incident that resulted in Jackson's bare breast being shown on live television. Both Timberlake and Jackson apologised, with Timberlake famously coining the phrase "wardrobe malfunction" to describe the accident.

In September 2006 Timberlake's second studio album was released after much public anticipation. FutureSex/LoveSounds showed an even more adult sound, and even included a Parental Advisory label for strong sexual content. FutureSex/LoveSounds broke records for pre-sales, sold more albums in the US than his previous release sold worldwide, and produced several hit singles including "SexyBack", "My Love" and "LoveStoned".

Between his solo albums Timberlake has also built a name for himself as a songwriter, producer and collaborator. He has collaborated with the likes of Nelly Furtado, Rihanna, The Black Eyed Peas, 50 Cent, and Snoop Dogg. On a rather more permanent basis he has formed an informal songwriting and producing partnership with hip-hop star Timbaland.

Timberlake Fighting For Acting Success

Oct, 5 2010

Justin Timberlake says he has to "fight against" his music career if he's to make it as an actor, according to an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The former *NSync star appears in David Fincher's Facebook movie, The Social Network, which has just hit cinemas. "I loved the part," he said, "and I wanted to do work with David so bad that I was like, 'We can read this scene butt naked if you guys want.'" But his ambitions to be taken seriously as an actor are hampered by his past as a world famous pop star. "I have to fight against my music career," he said. "But I [don't] care." Timberlake said he would "never stop making music," but that he had no current plans to record a follow-up to 2006's FutureSex / Lovesounds. "Does a painter make a painting because he has to make it by 21 December?" he asked. "No, he doesn't. It happens when it pours out of him. That's how music is for me."
