Biography

Edit

Kanye West emerged from a middle-class Chicago upbringing to become one of the biggest stars in hip-hop. He is internationally renowned for his three solo releases, his production work for other artists, and for his outspoken personality.

Known more often by his first name than his last, Kanye initially came to fame after being a named producer on Jay-Z's masterpiece album The Blueprint. An album that resurrected soul sampling in hip-hop, it directly led to Kanye earning a record contract with Roc-A-Fella. But before he could release a debut album, he was involved in a near-fatal car crash. As his jaw had to be wired together, he wrote (and rapped through his braces) what would become his debut single - "Through the Wire" - which showcased his trademark style of speeding-up soul samples so they played at a higher pitch. In 2004 he finally released his debut album The College Dropout, to widespread critical acclaim, huge commercial success and a Grammy for Best Rap Album. It spawned three hit singles and established Kanye as the biggest new star in hip-hop. Meanwhile, he established a new label for hip-hop (called G.O.O.D. Music), signing up and producing soulful albums for Common and young singer John Legend.

He followed up that debut success with Late Registration in 2005. Again it was met with enthusiastic reviews and chart-topping sales, and was nominated for eight Grammys - winning three, including Best Rap Album for a second time. Around the same time of its release, Kanye spoke out on MTV against homophobia in hip-hop. The following week, while co-presenting a televised fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Katrina, Kanye deviated from the script to criticise aspects of the reaction to the disaster, claiming it was lacking because so many victims were poor and black. He famously concluded his interjection by calmly stating - "George Bush doesn't care about black people".

In September 2007, Kanye released his third solo album - Graduation - to highly positive reviews and almost a million sales in its first week. When the Grammys came around again, Graduation was the obvious choice to win its third successive Best Rap Album award.

Kanye released his fourth album 808s and Heartbreak in 2008.

Toss-Up Thursday: Best of 2010

Dec, 8 2010

With Best of 2010 lists rolling in, we thought we’d summarize the Best of the Best by looking at Amazon.com, Paste, Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and Spinner. The Arcade Fire, Deerhunter, Mumford & Sons, The Black Keys, and LCD Soundsystem were all well received and appeared on multiple lists. But there were strong dark horses, too; Swedish electro-pop muse Robyn saw her release Body Talk garner an 8.7 (out of 10) on Pitchfork, and Sigh No More by Mumford & Sons was rated highest by Amazon’s well-versed music team, followed by The Arcade Fire’s The Suburbs. Spinner liked Beach House’s Teen Dream for No. 1, while Janelle Monae’s The ArchAndroid reached No. 2 on Paste’s list. Rolling Stone seemed eager to please the widest demographic, rating Elton John and Leon Russell’s The Union at No. 3, and country-crossover Jamey Johnson at No. 5. But it is outspoken super producer Kanye West and My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy reigning in 2010. Pitchfork gave him a perfect 10.0 and he topped Rolling Stone’s list, as well.

Kanye's Beautiful Fantasy: Half-A-Milli Sales and a No.1

Dec, 1 2010

Critics have been falling over each other to praise Kanye West's new album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and its success with reviewers has been matched by enthusiasm from fans. Fantasy is No.1 this week having sold 519,000 copies, a long way ahead of No.2 Nicki Minaj, whose debut album Pink Friday nevertheless scored an impressive 371,000. Fantasy's first week sales outstripped those of its predecessor, 808s & Heartbreak, which hit No.1 two years ago, by 69,000, despite the shrinking music market and Kanye's PR disaster at last year's VMAs. But the victim of Kanye's interruption that night, Taylor Swift, sold more than double Fantasy's first-week total with 1,047,000 first week sales of Speak Now. Kanye's tally is impressive, but it emphasizes just how incredible Taylor's first Speak Now week was. Four weeks on, a 71% jump helped Speak Now rebound up to No.3 this week with 256,000, just ahead of Susan Boyle's The Gift on 250,000. Meanwhile Minaj, who guests on Fantasy, would have been No.1 by a distance most weeks with a total of 371,000. Pink Friday's total is the second highest ever for a debut album by a female hip-hop artist, behind The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, which debuted with 423,000 sales on the back of Hill's success with The Fugees.

Kanye Responsible For Bush's "All-Time Low"

Nov, 5 2010

In an interview with NBC’s Matt Lauer scheduled to air next week, former President George W. Bush responded to Kanye West's Sept. 2, 2005 outburst during A Concert for Hurricane Relief when Kanye claimed “George Bush doesn't care about black people.” The comment resulted from the President's handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster, and left an indelible mark on Bush’s second term. Although he was in office during the 2001 World Trade Center attacks, Bush was unable to think of a worse moment during his tenure, and told his wife Laura the same at the time, reported Entertainment Weekly. Kanye’s assertion of racism “was one of the most disgusting moments in my presidency,” Bush told Lauer. In the President’s soon-to-be-published book, Decision Points, W. writes that the remark “represented an all-time low” of his tenure. Kanye responded to Bush during an interview with Houston DJ Devi Dev of Hot 97.9 The Boxx, saying he sympathized with the former President. “I can understand the way he feels to be accused of being a racist, in a way, because the same thing happened to me where I got accused of being a racist,” said Kanye of his Taylor Swift interruption at MTV’s 2009 VMAs. As Bush and Kanye react to one another through the media, ostensibly victimized by their own past behaviors and opinions, it is likely this isn’t the last word from either side.
