With her near-operatic soprano voice, ruminative and literate lyrics, and a very eccentric delivery, Kate Bush was years ahead of her time, pre-dating not only all manner of eccentric alt-rock to follow, but the so-called Women in Rock revolution of the early '90s. Tori Amos, Björk, Sarah McLachlan and Joanna Newsom all owe a huge debt to this pioneering British singer-songwriter. Born in Kent, England in 1958, Kate Bush was discovered at the tender age of 16 in the mid 1970s by David Gilmour, the lead singer of Pink Floyd. Her debut single, written at just 18, was the exuberant and theatrical chart-topper "Wuthering Heights". She continued to show such imaginative and playful tendencies throughout her career, peaking with the 1985 album Hounds of Love. Her unconventional style didn't prevent Bush from enjoying commercial success too, with nine Top 10 albums and 20 Top 30 singles in the UK. Her latest album Aerial, was released in 2005.
