Katy's Miserable Wedding Singer
Aug, 3 2010
The forthcoming marriage of upbeat pop-songbird Katy Perry to zany British comedian and avowed ladies man Russell Brand may have seemed an unlikely proposition, but the nuptials are still on course for September. To add to the sense of unreality, it seems that the music for the ceremony may be provided by one of Brand’s friends and favorite singers, King of the Miserablists, Morrissey.
Famed for bleak anthems and wilted flowers, the English singer rose to fame as frontman of The Smiths, and has long been known as the voice of the disenchanted youth. His views on marriage have proved to be just as pessimistic: as Perry told The Sun after her first meeting with Moz, "He’s Russell’s mate and he is fascinating but he was giving us a hard time about getting married. He swooned and sighed, ‘Oh, left hand third finger, don't do it.’ It was just so eloquent and poetic and like one of his songs."
Clearly Perry has a soft spot for the iconic curmudgeon. Whatever will be next? Should we watch the charts for a forthcoming Perry/Morrissey duet? Well... probably not!

Katy Perry: Princess Of Pop Radio
Jun, 29 2010
Katy Perry's current Hot 100 No.1 "California Gurls" has set a new record for most plays on pop radio in one week. The Snoop Dogg-featuring hit is top of the Pop Songs radio airplay chart, according to Billboard, after racking up an incredible 11,816 plays on the 132 eligible stations last week. That's an average of 90 plays per station, over seven days, or almost 13 plays per day.
Those who claim that today's pop radio stations play a smaller number of songs than before are supported by stats from the Pop Songs radio chart, unveiled by Billboard. The chart is 17 years old, but the four songs with the most plays in a single week were all released in the last six months. "California Gurls" is top, followed by Ke$ha's TiK-Tok (11,224), Lady Gaga's Bad Romance (10,859) and Taio Cruz's "Break Your Heart" (10,819). Leona Lewis's "Bleeding Love" rounds out the top five: her 2008 hit was played 10,665 times in a single week.
Katy Perry is currently promoting her second album under that name, Teenage Dream, which is due for release in August. She previously released a self-titled album under the name Katy Hudson.

Katy's New LP: "It's Roller-Skating!"
Mar, 31 2010
It may seem like it’s been nothing but red carpets and tabloid appearances for Katy Perry recently, but she’s been busier than you might think. Work on her next album is well underway and the finished disc is expected to be available as a summer release.
It will be the third full-length release for Perry: her gospel rock debut, self-titled under her real name Katy Hudson, failed to make an impression on the charts, but the shift in focus, genre and name for One Of The Boys proved to be a massive winner for the California girl. This time it seems she doesn’t plan to tinker too much with a winning formula, and it augers well for a second round of platinum awards. For her next release she promises an eclectic mix, and treated press at the Kids Choice Awards to some excitable teasers.
“I’m so excited!” she exclaimed. “We nailed it! It's roller-skating! It's '90s! It's Ace of Base! It's Cyndi Lauper! It's like all these colors and more… It's going to be fun. It's going to be one of those records that is everybody's favorite guilty pleasure.”

Katy Perry and Queen’s Brian May don’t exactly seem like two peas from the same pod, but they have established some kind of connection that’s made them the latest members of the musicians’ Mutual Love and Respect Society. On her MySpace page Perry cites the classic British rock band as a musical influence and credits May as “one of the men responsible for my love of music.” She adds, "if you haven't gotten into the amazingness that was/is Queen, get into it." May then posted a supportive blog about the young singer, saying “Katy Perry is the real thing. A Rock Star.” The venerable guitarist wrote his kind words after seeing Perry in concert and appears to have been rather impressed with the performance: “She’s a true entertainer. I’m so happy I went… Katy, you’re great.” Perry was surely delighted by the validation as the Perry/May love-in follows an acrimonious verbal assault from The Gossip’s Beth Ditto who accused Perry of “riding on the back of gay culture.” But Perry remains reluctant to be drawn into negativity, saying "I've learnt in the past year that one artist should never insult another artist's music - it's tacky. And with me, it always comes back to bite me on the ass!" As she shows, sticking to positive commentary reaps far better rewards.

As a special year-end treat, the SoundUnwound News Randomizer unearthed the following great stories of 2008; and what a year it was. Not only was it announced that Lil Wayne was definitely not dead, neither was Amy Winehouse (it was only an artwork). It was confirmed that Francis Rossi definitely didn’t live in Dover but the jury was still undecided about whether Amanda Palmer had a fat belly or not. Nobody at all wanted John McCain to use their music and the MTV Awards refused to be rickrolled. Katy Perry may or may not have kissed a girl, but Taylor Swift was not about to kiss a Jonas boy any time soon. Axl Rose finally got it together, but Robert Plant refused to sing with the lads. But the continuing news from this year, and the last 31, is that Elvis continues to break records from beyond the grave.

Youthful rebellion is a rite of passage. There are so many ways to disappoint - underage drinking, staying out too late or failing to secure the place at the University your parents had set their hearts on for you. Rising star Katy Perry has been afforded the opportunity to take the concept of annoying the wrinklies to a whole new level with the release of her Hot 100 topping single "I Kissed a Girl". The tale of drunken experimentation of the sapphic variety has angered her religious parents who claim that the song promotes the sin of homosexuality. Mary Hudson, an evangelical Christian preacher, said that she hated the song and the direction her daughter’s life had taken since she became famous. However, she added the comforting affirmation that “Katy is our daughter and we love her”, which is surely a heartwarming reflection of the age-old kids vs. parents scenario played in suburban homes across the world.
