Biography

Edit

The first product given to us by American Idol was feisty singer Kelly Clarkson. She won the first series of the show in 2002, topped the Hot 100 with debut single "A Moment Like This", had a brief foray into acting with a poorly received film From Justin to Kelly, and released her first pop-focused double platinum album Thankful in 2003.

Her second album Breakaway (2004) afforded her the opportunity to evolve a little more as an artist, veering from her pop beginnings into rockier territory. Its appeal was buoyed by the success of its singles, including "Since U Been Gone", which hit No.2 on the Hot 100 and was a smash hit in several other countries too.

Clarkson then decided she wanted to write a darker, more personal record for her third album, but her label bosses weren't happy with the album. Clarkson demanded that she should be given some creative license after selling 15 million records, while Sony BMG wanted another radio-friendly pop record. Eventually she was able to release her version of My December in 2007. It was fairly well received, and hit No.2 on the album charts on release.

Kelly Clarkson

Mar, 19 2009

Kelly Clarkson's fourth album has hit No.1 on the Billboard 200, six weeks after its lead single "My Life Would Suck Without You" hit the top spot on the Hot 100 singles chart. All I Ever Wanted sold 255,000 copies, just over half of what U2 sold last week, but the Irish stadium rockers suffered a 72% drop in sales in their second week: No Line On The Horizon landed with a bump at No.3 with sales of 132,000. In between at No.2 was The-Dream's Love vs. Money. Despite all the record industry's recent problems, Kelly has consistently hit similar sales figures over a six year recording career that began with victory on the first season of American Idol. Contrast that with Taylor Hicks, winner of Idol's fifth season, in 2006. His self-titled debut sold 298,000 copies in its first week, but a year later he was dropped by his label. This week, without major label support, his sophomore release The Distance could only sell 8,000 - a dizzying 97% drop from his first effort.
