Ke$ha, SuBo Dominate Billboard Charts

As we enter a new decade, two very different women are dominating the Billboard charts. New star Ke$ha, a.k.a. 22-year old Californian Kesha Rose Sebert, is top of the Hot 100 with her debut solo single "TiK ToK." It was downloaded 610,000 times last week, landing on thousands of shiny new MP3 players delivered by Father Christmas. That's a record download total for a female, and also the second highest total ever behind Flo Rida's "Right Round," which coincidentally featured uncredited vocals by Ke$ha. Meanwhile, over on the Billboard 200, 48-year old Scottish spinster Susan Boyle continues to defy all kinds of expectations. She's the first artist since accurate counts were kept to go straight to No.1 with a debut album and stay there for more than three weeks: Lauryn Hill and Ashanti both achieved three, but SuBo is at five and counting. She's also only the fourth artist since 1991 (when Nielsen SoundScan began its computerized sales tracking) to sell over half-a-million records for five consecutive weeks: The Beatles (1), Garth Brooks (Sevens) and the Backstreet Boys (Black & Blue) are the others.
