Kurt Cobain

The Beatles: Rock Band isn't the only big music video game releases this week: Rock Band rivals Guitar Hero released the fifth in their series of games, and it's immediately come under attack from Courtney Love for its depiction of Kurt Cobain. The former Nirvana frontman is an unlockable character in the game, meaning players can make a likeness of Cobain perform songs by artists other than Nirvana. Courtney is upset about a video posted online showing a Guitar Hero 5 likeness of Cobain performing Bon Jovi's "You Give Love A Bad Name," and other songs it is asserted Cobain would never have performed. In a confusing Twitter tirade she threatened to sue game developers Activision, before former Nirvana members Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic issued a statement also condemning the game. Activision say they've acted within their rights, stating: “Guitar Hero secured the necessary licensing rights from the Cobain estate in a written agreement signed by Courtney Love to use Kurt Cobain’s likeness as a fully playable character in Guitar Hero 5.” Did Courtney forget to read the small print?
