Biography

Edit

LCD Soundsystem is the vehicle for New Yorker James Murphy's self-aware electronic/indie-rock crossover. Taking cues from 80s influences such as The Fall and New Order, Murphy has been a huge hit with music critics by forging a 21st Century version that is equally comfortable in nightclubs and living-rooms. He is also a co-founder of DFA Records, which is the home to similar indie-dance acts like The Juan MacLean, Hot Chip and Prinzhorn Dance School.

LCD Soundsystem first won attention with the 2002 release of the hilarious 12" single "Losing My Edge", which detailed the worries of an ageing hipster. The yelping "Give It Up" and "Yeah" followed before he finally compiled a debut album in 2005: the double-set LCD Soundsystem. Helped by hit single "Daft Punk is Playing at My House", it was a huge hit with reviewers and was considered one of the best albums of the year. His next proper studio album was March 2007's Sound of Silver, which was considered even better than the debut as he was able to inject some emotional resonance into the dance-punk blueprint. It also made the Top 40 in the UK, though neither album has yet entered the US Top 40.

In November 2007 another LCD Soundsystem album was released on general sale: 45:33 was originally a long-form composition to accompany jogging, commissioned by Nike and released only on iTunes. The wider re-release was accompanied by 25 minutes of new music.

LCD Soundsystem vs. Ticket Scalpers

Feb, 16 2011

LCD Soundsystem front man James Murphy is really quite pissed. His band announced their Long Goodbye farewell gig, taking place at Madison Square Garden on April 2, but when tickets went on pre-sale for the show last week, fans were almost shut out. Despite the band’s best efforts, the cause of the sell-out appears to be scalpers, whose bots crashed the Bowry Presents website. Fans were left standing out in the cold. And again, when tickets went on sale through Ticketmaster, all the tickets almost instantaneously were snapped up. But when tickets were available just as quickly on secondary market sites, StubHub (owned by eBay) and Ticketsnow (owned by Ticketmaster), Murphy began Tweeting his disgust, “$1500 for a single ticket? F*ck you, scalpers. You are parasites. I HATE you.” But slow down there, tiger; Murphy forgot to mention a few things: American Express cardholders had first priority during the pre-sale and there are always holdbacks of tickets for VIPs or for other reasons. Plus, even though MSG holds about 20,000 people, LCD’s show only had 13,000 seats. So if a couple thousand tickets went to American Express cardholders and VIPs, it’s quite reasonable that ten or 11,000 seats would sell out in a hot second. Regardless of whether or not they created the situation, the band, hoping to lower ticket prices and deflate the artificially created secondary market, announced they will play four shows leading up to the big Goodbye at MSG. The shows will be March 28, 29, 30, and 31st at NYC’s Terminal 5. You can read all of Murphy’s funny reaction to the situation and his few choice words to scalpers here. Tickets for the Terminal 5 shows go on sale this Friday morning, February 18 for $40 apiece. -Court
