Lee Ann Womack is a Texas born country music singer-songwriter best known for "I Hope You Dance".
Womack started her performing career with the South Plains Junior College band, Country Caravan. When she left college she went to study music business in Nashville where she also worked at MCA spending her off hours writing songs. It was the strength of her writing that drew her to the attention of Tree Publishing and she began to write songs for them, some of which were recorded by well established artists including Rick Skaggs. Skaggs (and others) turned up for the recording of her self-titled debut album. The album made the top ten of the country charts and went on to platinum sales.
Womack moved toward the country mainstream for her next album, and more so for the follow-up I Hope You Dance. The album had a mainstream hit, with a single of the same name, and provided Womack with triple-platinum sales and earned her a long list of awards from Academy of Country Music. Despite the Grammy nominations for Something Worth Leaving Behind sales were poor, however she did get a boost when her collaboration with Willie Nelson on "Mendocino Country Line" won them a Grammy. She focused more on country rather than the pop for There's More Where That Came From and was rewarded with a gold-seller.
