The country singer-songwriter and musician Leon Russell was born in Oklahoma in 1942. He began his career as a session musician and has been the session man of choice for along list of artists including the Rolling Stones, The Byrds and Herb Alpert.
Russell moved to LA to do session work with Glen Campbell, moving on to Phil Spector's studio. But he wanted to record his own work as well as working with others. He released his debut album in 1967, Look Inside the Asylum Choir, which he made with fellow session man Marc Benno, recorded in a studio he built himself. This would be the first of over thirty albums released throughout his career which reached a peak with his 1972 album Carney, which reached No.2 in charts promoted by the single "Tightrope". Another Carney track "This Masquerade" would go on to win a Grammy for George Benson. Russell's song writing would also provide success for Joe Cocker with "Delta Lady" and "Superstar" would be a hit for The Carpenters and Luther Vandross.
Russell's most recent album was released in 2006 and he is still touring
