Lil' Kim is the US born rapper known for her sexually charged lyrics and her contribution to Grammy-winning "Lady Marmalade" from the film Moulin Rouge.
Producer/rapper Christopher (the Notorious) B.I.G Wallace introduced Kim to rap group Junior M.A.F.I.A. where she started her recording career, appearing on singles from the Conspiracy album, one of which, "Get Money", made the top 20 of the Hot 100. She kicked off her solo career in 1996 with the Hard Core album. She took the genre's overt sexuality, usually ascribed to men, and made it work in her favour and the critically acclaimed album made the top 20 of Billboard, helped by her No.1 single "No Time".
The death of her mentor, Wallace, prompted Kim to call her next album The Notorious K.I.M.. The platinum-seller received a mixed reaction, and was considered by some critics to be too 'poppy'. What those same critics made of Kim's next move is anybody's guess, as they were drowned out by the clamour surrounding "Lady Marmalade". The single, which she performed in collaboration with Christina Aguilera, Mýa and Pink, spent five weeks at No.1 and won a Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration.
Her next album outing, La Bella Mafia with collaborators Missy Elliot and Kanye West, returned to the sexuality of her debut. The album went to No.5 on the Billboard 200, picked up more awards and gave Kim another platinum disk. She had another platinum-seller with The Naked Truth, however it was released at a time when Kim was due to go to prison for a perjury conviction. Not one to miss an opportunity, she made a reality show Lil' Kim: Countdown to Lockdown which charted her life in the run up to her sentence. Since her release from prison she has collaborated with a number of artists including Diddy and Swizz Beats and has started work on her next album.
