Overview Edit

Exile in Guyville is American indie rock singer-songwriter Liz Phair's 1993 debut album. In the spring of 1994, the album briefly made it to the U.S. charts, selling over 200,000 copies. As of July 2003, the album has sold 450,000 copies.

The album inspired a number of imitators, and the lo-fi sound and emotional honesty of Phair's lyrics were frequently cited by critics as outstanding qualities. It frequently appears on many critics' best-of lists. It was ranked 15 in Spin's "100 Greatest Albums, 1985-2005". VH1 named "Exile in Guyville" the 96th Greatest Album Of All-Time. In 2003, the album was ranked number 328 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. In 1999, Pitchfork Media rated Exile in Guyville as the 5th best album of the 1990s. However, in their 2003 revision of the list, it moved to number 30.

I never thought Dave Matthews would do something I'd care about, but he did! He signed Liz Phair recently to the ATO Records label that he's co-owner of, and re-released her "classic" debut Exile In Guyville.

This is a slightly odd choice, though. Firstly, why re-master an album that relies so heavily on its imperfect and raw sound? The 3 bonus tracks here are pretty useless. "Say You" is a reggae cover and is, to me, unlistenable, but nice to know they were messin around in the studio. "Ant In…

3 stars If you have the original, you don't need the 2008 rerelease
When am I gonna learn to read the reviews before I buy something? Well, in this case it's confusing because Amazon has the reviews of the original EXILE and of the 2008 rerelease all mixed in together. The original album is great--five-star--essential, in fact. The 2008 version is apparently remixed, with the main effect--so far as I can hear--of making some of the vocals less clear. The three extra tracks don't add anything. "Ant in Alaska" starts off understated and interesting, but when the v…
