Biography

Edit

Loretta Lynn is one of the foremost American country music singers; she has enjoyed massive success with over 70 albums to her name, which have acted as a counterpoint to her turbulent private life.

Married at thirteen, her husband bought her a guitar when she was eighteen and she taught herself to play. Eventually she started to sing in bands and when she appeared on a talent contest, was spotted and signed by Zero Records. It was the start of a long and productive recording career and during the two decades of the 1960s and 1970s she was at the height of her fame. She recorded honky-tonk but lyrically her style evolved as she became more confessional and allowed her feminist views shine forth. Her collaboration with Conway Twitty during the 1970s led to five No.1s and seven other top ten hits. In 1980, her autobiography was made into an award winning film starring Tommy Lee Jones and Sissy Spacek; the success served only to further increase her profile within the mainstream.

After the peak of her success she slackened the recording, but continued to tour until the ill-health of her husband forced her to slow down. He died in 1996, after 48 years of tumultuous marriage. More recently she has been collaborating with Jack White on the 2004 Grammy award winning album Van Lear Rose; this has allowed her material to reach a whole new generation of country music lovers. In 2010 She celebrated her 50th year in music and continues to tour across the country sing to her legion of fans.

Honky Tonk Woman

Oct, 14 2010

With more than 70 albums released, 16 No. 1 singles, and five decades logged as a musician, Loretta Lynn this week was honored by a multitude of her country music colleagues and The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, who bestowed upon her their Merit Award and Lifetime Achievement Award. The event was hosted by Reba McEntyre and elicited performances by Garth Brooks, Kid Rock, Martina McBride, and Lee Ann Womack at the venerable Ryman Auditorium in Nashville; the same stage where Lynn made her Grand Ole Opry debut 50 years before. Known to many as the “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” after her No.1 hit and 1976 autobiography-cum-movie, Lynn grew up in Kentucky and was married by the age of 13. She successfully parlayed her life experiences and views into a string of hits. Said Jack White, who produced her 2004 album Van Lear Rose, "Nobody tells it quite like Loretta... She is the greatest female singer-songwriter of the 20th century. She championed women's rights in the South and for women everywhere." The album won a Grammy™ and introduced a new generation to country music. In the 60s and 70s Lynn enjoyed her greatest commercial successes penning and performing duets with Conway Twitty. She was the first woman to win the Country Music Association’s Entertainer of the Year award and was a natural addition to the Country Music Hall of Fame.
