Is this even legal? Madonna covering American Pie. Yes I like the Backstreet Boys, Spice Girls and harp on people who say music of the past is better than today's music, but I do have respect for a legend. When I first heard on the radio that Don Mclean liked Madonna's version I thought that this is scientiffically impossible. This song is to Rock & Roll history what the Titanic disaster is to maritime history. Then, I listened to it and wow! It actually works. Perhaps, Madonna, aware of this song's legendary acclaim concluded that she--in all her splender--could never succesfully cover this song convincingly, and to try to reproduce it may spell the doom of her career. Was this legend the thing that would bring Mrs. Material Girl herself to her knees? Wisely, Madonna chooses to reinvent the song, to make it hers as if it were hers alone brought about for the first time in history by her and in a way only she could provide. Like it or hate it, you have got to give her credit for her bravity--bravity counter-balanced by alot of wisdom. Madonna knows a basic fundamental in music: "Don't ever try to recreate a legend. It will surely break you". Perhaps, this is Madonna's "rite of passage"--the challenge that could crush her is the very one that will take her to new heights in her career. And what do you know? She has Mclean's blessing!
