Maná are a Mexican rock band from Guadalajara who incorporate Latin and Caribbean influences into their music. The band was at the forefront of the Rock En Español movement which promoted songs sung in Spanish.
The band started out in 1980 named Sombrero Verde and, covering popular European bands including The Beatles, they recorded two albums Sombrero Verde and A Ritmo de Rock. Keen to change their approach to music they renamed themselves and started to write songs in Spanish. Their debut album Maná was released in 1986, although they started to gather greater support with the follow-up 1990’s Falta Amor. The album was helped into the charts a year after its release by the hit single “Rayando del Sol” and backed by an extensive tour of Latin America. Their next release, ¿Dónde Jugarán los Niños?, was a big hit and helped establish the band in the US and Europe. In 1998 they were invited to collaborate with Carlos Santana on his Supernatural album.
Further album releases cemented their reputation and they have received the Best Latin Rock Alternative Album Grammy for three of them. In 2004 Maná performed at the Pavarotti And Friends concert in Italy, testament to their international appeal.
