Manic Street Preachers

Fervent followers of the Manic Street Preachers will be looking forward to the May 19 release of the band’s ninth studio album, Journal For Plague Lovers. Part of the appeal is the fact that all 13 tracks on the album will feature lyrics written by former guitarist Richey Edwards – a charismatic figure whose disappearance after third album The Holy Bible in 1995 has never been explained. The retro feel is echoed in the cover art for the new album, which is a piece of work by Jenny Saville, whose artwork previously featured on Edwards’ final album with the Manics. The band have indicated that fans should not expect any of the tracks to be released as singles: in an interview with London radio station Xfm, James Dean Bradfield explained, “It's hard to envisage some of these lyrics being played as a single. It's just such a body of work and the concerns of somebody that didn't care about commercial success.” Bassist Nicky Wire continued: "It's a tribute to Richey…[and] it's a tribute to the notion of an 'album'. It feels kind of old fashioned, it's pre-digital. It was written on a typewriter because Richey never had a mobile phone or a laptop." Edwards was legally declared 'presumed dead' in 2008, but his body has never been found.
