Overview Edit

Sailing to Philadelphia is an album by Mark Knopfler released in 2000. The title track is drawn from Thomas Pynchon's novel about Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon the two English surveyors who established the border between Pennsylvania and Maryland, Delaware and Virginia in the 1760s. The border later became known as the Mason-Dixon Line and has been used since the 1820s to denote the border between the Southern United States and the northern states.

The album has sold more than 3.5 million copies worldwide. In some territories (Western Europe being one example), the album was released as an HDCD and a 5.1 Surround Sound DVD-A.

The driving first cut, "What It Is," oozes with imagery of Scottish nightlife and a slightly sinister undercurrent. Yet the song is thrilling; Knopfler's clean Stratocaster sound, which was…

3 stars Inspiration, up to a point
Being a big Dire Straits fan, I couldn't wait for the release of this album. The two opening tracks are just magnificent. However, songs like "Who's Your Baby Now" and "Do America" sound as though they were written in a hurry to fill some comercial demand from the (Sorry for the cliche) suits. Mark Knopfler feel for his music, and his guitar playing are evident. He is fantastic, but his choice of material may be welcomed as somewhat boring. It may sound as though I long for a return of Dire Stra…
