Alt rockers Matchbox Twenty formed in Orlando, Florida in the mid nineties after founding members Rob Thomas (vocals, piano), Brian Yale (bass) and Paul Doucette (drums), left previous band Tabitha's Secret and recruited Kyle Cook (lead guitar, vocals) and Adam Gaynor (rhythm guitar) to round out the five-piece.
Matchbox Twenty's 1996 debut album Yourself or Someone Like You sold more than 12 million albums in the US alone. This radio friendly face of alt rock spawned the world wide hits "Long Day", "Push", "Real World" and "Back 2 Good" and kept Yourself or Someone Like You in the charts throughout '97 and '98.
In 2000 prior to the release of their second album, Mad Season, the band changed its name from Matchbox 20 to Matchbox Twenty. Mad Seasons showed a change of sound for the band, to more grown-up music rich with lush instrumentation and emotive ballads. However despite this change, the album went on to double platinum status in the US. With their third studio album More Than You Think You Are, they returned to their alt rock roots and received much critical praise although it was not as commercially successful as their previous two albums. Then in 2005 Adam Gaynor left the band while they were on hiatus pursuing side projects.
Matchbox Twenty's latest offering was a greatest hits album Exile On Mainstream, released in October 2007.
