His debut album, the soul inspired Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite was released two years after its recording because of record company doubts about its commercial potential. The single "Ascension (Don't Ever Wonder)" proved the record company wrong and helped take the album to gold sales. It also earned Maxwell a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Album.
Maxwell's follow-up Embrya lost out to Erykah Badu's Baduizm for the Grammy for Best R&B Album, but it did win the Soul Train Music Award for Best Male Soul/R&B Album. Embrya made it No.3 in the Billboard 200, while the R Kelly penned single "Fortunate" took the title of Billboard Magazines No.1 R&B Single of 1999. His 2001 album Now went to No.1 on the Billboard 200.
Maxwell is currently working on a trilogy of albums called Black Summer Night with one album a year to be released, commencing in 2007.
