Biography

Edit

MC Hammer is best-known for his 1990 international smash-hit single "U Can't Touch This", which featured Hammer rapping catch-phrases like the title and "Stop - Hammer time!" over Rick James' "Super Freak". It won him two Grammy Awards, and propelled sales of album Please Hammer Don't Hurt 'Em over ten million, making it the biggest-selling hip-hop album ever at the time. The song, the catch-phrases, and the video starring Hammer dancing in his famous baggy trousers, have had a big impact on popular culture, with each being regularly referenced on television and in music.

Although Hammer is a figure of fun to many, he can be credited for "U Can't Touch This" bringing rap music to the attention of mainstream audiences like nothing else before it. His preceding album, Let's Get It Started, had sold over three-million copies itself.

MC Hammer continued to record and release albums in the 90s to more commercial success. However, he famously squandered his millions and was declared bankrupt in 1996. Since then, he has focussed on family life and become a Christian preacher.

MC Hammer

What do you remember about MC Hammer? The multi-platinum albums? The baggy diaper trousers? The hoppy, skippy Hammer dance? Maybe the thing you remember most is the rags-to-riches-to-rags-again story, thanks to Hammer's quick embrace of the superstar lifestyle which he enjoyed at the peak of his career. After the heady heights of the 10x platinum Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em LP, Hammer’s career nose dived, but his infamy didn’t and his story became a cautionary tale for those tempted to squander millions rather than invest in a sensible pension portfolio. An autobiography would certainly have made for interesting reading and one was planned as long ago as 2003. However, "Enemies of the Father: Messages from the Heart on Being a Family Man" never appeared and it seems that Hammerman is facing a $61,000 lawsuit over its non-appearance. However, his history of weathering failure is undisputed and Hammer seems unconcerned, stating simply that he’s “going another direction”. Perhaps in a market which can make a mint from the comparatively benign memoirs of 16 year old Miley Cyrus, this is one golden opportunity Hammer shouldn’t have missed.
