Biography

Edit

Me’shell NdegeOcello is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist whose musical influences include soul, hip-hop and jazz.

NdegeOcello played the Washington go-go circuit as a teenager, before moving to New York to pursue a full-time career. She came to the attention of Madonna and was the first artist to sign to her Maverick record label. NdegeOcello had a hit with her debut for the label, “If That’s Your Boyfriend (He Wasn’t Last Night?)”, which took her debut, Plantation Lullabies to No.35 on the R&B/Hip-Hop albums chart, and earned her three Grammy nominations.

She interspersed her album releases with collaborations with artists from different musical backgrounds, teaming up with John Mellencamp, the pair had a big hit with “Wild Night”. Other collaborations included Chaka Khan, with “Never Miss the Water”, and Queen Pen with “Girlfriend”.

Of her album releases, her biggest mainstream success came from her second album Peace Beyond Passion, but she scored a Top 5 on the Contemporary Jazz charts with The Spirit of Jamia : Dance of the Infidel in 2005.
