Biography

Edit

Metric are a Canadian indie band built around the duo of singer Emily Haines and guitarist James Shaw, both of whom are also members of the successful Toronto collective Broken Social Scene.

Their synth-pop first earned national exposure in 2001 when a song from a limited-edition EP was used in an advert for Polaroid. Metric's first proper album was released in 2003 - Old World Underground, Where Are You Now? - and it received warm reviews and sold reasonably well. This was followed by Live It Out in 2005, which divided critics. It was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize in 2006 (a prize awarded to the best Canadian album in a year), but it did not win.

Trivia

Edit
  • In 1999, Shaw and Haines decided to call their partnership "Metric", after a synthesizer beat that Shaw used on his sampler and as a reference to the duo's musical precision.
