Michael Franti (born April 21, 1966) is an American poet, musician, and composer of African, Native American, Irish, French, and German descent.
Franti is the creator and lead vocalist of Michael Franti & Spearhead, a band that blends hip hop with a variety of other styles including funk, reggae, jazz, folk, and rock. He is a successful solo artist as well as being an outspoken supporter for a wide spectrum of peace and social justice issues.
Prior to Michael Franti and Spearhead, Franti was in The Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy, a collaboration with Tse from 1991-1993. Franti also worked with jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter, and electronic musicians Mark Pistel and Jack Dangers of the Meat Beat Manifesto.
In 1994, Franti formed a new band called Spearhead with a few studio musicians, including mainstay Carl Young and James Gray, and announced the dissolution of Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy. They released two albums before their contract with Capitol Records ran out.
In order to keep recording using the "Spearhead" name, the band became Michael Franti and Spearhead. The band has subsequently released five albums, their most recent being 2010's The Sound of Sunshine.
